Gatherer:

Upgrades to your Vitality and Aether Extraction skills must be purchased from a Vitality Master or Aether Master, which will add 1 point to your skill and raise your max skill by 100 points.

You can also buy special hats that give the ability to sense gatherable items near you (they appear as a plant icon on the minimap). Prices range from 9,105 Kinah for the first hat, to 1,530,910 Kinah for the 4th hat!

Tables of everything that can be Gathered can be found at Harvestables.

Most harvest nodes give you 3 tries, but gem nodes and some others only have 1, and Small Vortex (for Aether Extraction) gives you 6 tries, as if to make up for how darn difficult they are to find/harvest. No matter how many max attempts the node has, if you fail twice the node will vanish.

You must have at least one empty space in your cube to harvest, even if what you are harvesting would stack in your cube. A harvest node will be trivial when your skill is 45 points above the minimum to harvest that node, and you will not get any skill-ups.

Procs:
There are rare special harvests that will happen on random occasions. These can yield green or even blue harvesting results. These items are used for more advanced forms of crafting with higher gains. In extremely rare instances, special weapons resembling the node it came from can be harvested, which are used for skin remodeling.

Most of the above information I found on ZAMWiki.
Tip #1
Gather while you are leveling, between skill cool down, and healing time, that way you won’t feel bored.
Tip #2
Gather 1 type of material for 10-15 skill point gain, reason being as your skill increases it gets easier and faster to gather that type of material, and you still gain skill at the same rate between 1-10 skill points of that material.
